NTSA probes deadly Industrial Area crash, summons Sacco officials

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has launched investigations into a fatal road traffic crash involving a Public Service Vehicle (PSV)  along Enterprise Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.

At least four people were killed and 15 others injured after a matatu reportedly lost control and overturned along the road in Nairobi on Wednesday night, police had earlier said.

They included three passengers and an unidentified female pedestrian aged about 30 years.

Police said the incident happened at about 8:00 pm on June 3, near the Dar-es-Salaam Roundabout in the Industrial Area.

At least 15 other passengers on board sustained injuries of varying severity and were taken to different hospitals for treatment.

NTSA also reported a second incident along the Nairobi-Namanga Highway involving a vehicle operated by Royal Swift Express Limited, in which several people were injured.

The authority said it was deeply saddened by the incidents, extending condolences to the families who lost loved ones and wishing those injured a swift recovery.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of those who lost their loved ones. We wish those injured a swift and full recovery,” the authority said.

NTSA further confirmed that it had already moved to summon officials from both the Sacco officials and Royal Swift Express Limited as part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the two crashes.

NTSA reiterated its commitment to conducting thorough investigations into both incidents.

“We remain committed to thorough investigations and we will take appropriate action,” the authority said.

The regulator also issued a renewed warning to all PSV operators and crew members, urging strict adherence to traffic rules and maximum caution on the roads.

“All PSV operators and crew members are urged to exercise maximum caution and strictly obey traffic rules,” director general Nashon Kondiwa said.

Enterprise Road, located within the Industrial Area, is one of the city’s key commercial arteries, often experiencing heavy truck and commuter traffic throughout the day.

The Nairobi-Namanga Highway, on the other hand, remains a critical inter-county route linking Kenya and Tanzania, with high-speed traffic and long-distance operators frequently using the stretch.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Nairobi City mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Authorities are also seeking to trace the motorcycle rider believed to have been involved in events leading up to the accident.
