Tragedy as 12-year-old boy dies, brother rushed to hospital after sand heap gives way in Luanda

A 12-year-old boy died while his elder sibling narrowly survived after a pile of sand collapsed on them during sand harvesting activities in Luanda Sub-County, Vihiga County.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, at Ebusiralo Sub-location, police said.

According to police, the matter was reported by a parent who stated that her two sons, aged 15 and 12, had been harvesting sand at the homestead of a local resident at around 3:20 p.m. when a heap of sand reportedly gave way and buried them.

The two juveniles were fully covered by the collapsing sand, resulting in suffocation.

Members of the public responded swiftly and managed to rescue the boys before rushing them to Kima Mission Hospital for treatment.

However, the younger boy was pronounced dead on arrival. His elder brother was treated and later discharged in stable condition.

Police officers from Luanda Police Station visited the scene and documented it as investigations were launched.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kima Mission Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The incident underscores the risks associated with sand harvesting, particularly in unsecured excavation sites where sudden collapses may occur.

Authorities have noted that such incidents have been reported in the area on several occasions, with some resulting in fatalities.

In a separate incident, police in Narok Central Sub-County have launched a manhunt for two suspects following the killing of a 35-year-old man at Olkinyei Shopping Centre in Narok County.

The incident was reported on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, at around 1:30 p.m.

Officers from Narok Police Station, accompanied by Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel from Narok Central, visited the scene and found the body of Thuo Waitana lying outside a one-room rental house.

Investigators established that the victim had sustained deep cut wounds on the neck and head.

At the scene, detectives recovered two blood-stained Maasai swords believed to have been used in the attack. Inside the deceased’s house, officers also recovered four blood-stained bedsheets, which were preserved as exhibits.

Preliminary findings indicate that the victim was allegedly attacked by his neighbour, identified as Muindi Sururu, and the neighbour’s wife.

The two suspects are said to have fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Crime scene officers processed the area before the body was transferred to Narok County Referral Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
