Man killed by falling tree branch while cutting timber in Kirinyaga

A tragic accident has left residents of Ngariama in Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, in shock after a 33-year-old man was killed by a falling tree branch while cutting timber.

The deceased, identified as Dennis, reportedly died on the spot after a large branch broke off and struck him as he and several others were cutting down a tree in the village.

According to residents, the incident occurred as the group was pushing the tree during the felling process when one of the branches suddenly snapped and fell on him.

Neighbours led by Duncan Njeru Karuba said Dennis was among a group of young men running alongside the falling tree when the branch detached unexpectedly, hitting him fatally.

Another neighbour, Anthony Mwangi Muriuki, said Dennis had been given the tree by his father to cut for timber that he intended to use in constructing his own house.

“He was working hard to prepare materials to build his home. Unfortunately, the branch fell on him before they could finish cutting the tree,” said Mwangi.

The deceased’s uncle, Francis Mbogo, said the family was devastated by the sudden loss, noting that he had spoken with Dennis only moments before the accident.

“I was shocked to see him dead because we had just talked. Tomorrow he was supposed to come and help me cut down another tree,” Mbogo said emotionally.

As Dennis’ body was being moved to the mortuary, stunned residents gathered at the scene, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

“This is the first incident of its kind in this village. It is very unfortunate that Dennis lost his life while trying to earn a living,” Mwangi added.
