County government unveils KSh70 million facelift plan for Uhuru Gardens in Mombasa

The County Government of Mombasa has unveiled plans for a KSh 70 million redevelopment of Mapembeni, popularly known as Uhuru Gardens, in a move aimed at transforming the iconic public space into a modern recreational and tourism hub.

The project is expected to breathe new life into one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks while enhancing its appeal to residents and visitors.

The facelift will include the development of family picnic zones, a modern children’s play park, outdoor gym facilities, dedicated jogging and walking tracks, modern washrooms and nappy-changing rooms.

The project will also feature a cultural amphitheatre, a tourist information centre, improved landscaping and a secure perimeter wall to enhance safety and improve the overall user experience.

County officials say the redevelopment forms part of wider efforts to modernize public spaces, promote healthy lifestyles and strengthen Mombasa’s tourism sector.

Once completed, Mapembeni Gardens is expected to become a premier destination park capable of hosting cultural events, family activities, community gatherings and tourism-related engagements in the heart of the coastal city.
