The fierce “Ingo derby” rivalry returns to western Kenya on Saturday as Kakamega Homeboyz host AFC Leopards in Kakamega in a highly anticipated Sportpesa League encounter.
With only three matches remaining in the 2025–26 season, the fixture carries massive implications for both sides.
The visitors are hunting a first league title in 28 years, while the hosts look to salvage pride and break a frustrating winless streak.
AFC Leopards sit second in the league table with 61 points, trailing arch-rivals Gor Mahia by four points. For Ingwe, any slip-up in Kakamega will effectively end their dreams of lifting the trophy.
Meanwhile, Homeboyz occupy sixth place with 47 points. Although Patrick Odhiambo’s charges are out of the title equation, they remain a dangerous side capable of playing the ultimate spoiler on their own turf.
“We know exactly what is at stake for our opponents, but our focus is entirely on correcting our own trajectory,” said Odhiambo during a pre-match press briefing.
“Our recent form has not reflected the quality we possess in this squad, and a derby is the perfect stage to show our true character.”
Homeboyz enter the clash on the back of a five-match winless run, most recently drawing 2-2 away against Nairobi United. Breaking this slump against a title-chasing Leopards side will require tactical discipline.
Odhiambo’s side shocked Ingwe with a 1-0 away victory in Nairobi in the reverse fixture, a result they hope to replicate.
AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani, who was named the SportPesa Coach of the Month for March, is fully aware of the hostile atmosphere awaiting him in Kakamega.
His technical bench has spent the week preparing the players mentally for a high-intensity battle.
“Bukhungu is always a difficult hunting ground, and Homeboyz will want nothing more than to dent our title ambitions,” Ambani stated. “I have told the boys that we must play with cool heads and maximum efficiency if we want to take all three points back to Nairobi.”
Homeboyz boast a lethal attack that has netted 43 goals this season, but their defensive fragilities have cost them valuable points in recent weeks.
“We have spent the last few training sessions addressing our defensive lapses because you cannot afford to give an organised team like Leopards free space,” Odhiambo remarked.
“If we remain compact at the back and transition quickly, I am confident we can control the tempo of the game.”
Leopards, on the other hand, boast one of the sturdiest defensive records in the division, having conceded just 23 goals in 31 outings.
Ambani is counting on that defensive resilience to weather the early storm expected from the Abana Ba Ingo faithful.
“A championship-winning team is built from the back, and our defensive shape will be tested heavily on Saturday,” Ambani explained.
“We must weather their initial pressure, minimise unforced errors, and exploit the spaces they leave behind when they push forward.”
Despite the mathematical mountain Homeboyz face to climb back into the top four, Odhiambo insists his players are motivated by the sheer weight of the local derby.
“A match against AFC Leopards is never just another fixture on the calendar; it is about local bragging rights and pride for our fans,” Odhiambo emphasised.
“We owe our supporters a performance that matches their passion, and we will fight until the final whistle.”
For Ambani, the objective remains singular. With Gor Mahia facing a tricky away fixture of their own, against Murang’a Seal at St Sebastian Park, Leopards must ensure they do not blink first in the final stretch of the marathon campaign.
“At this stage of the season, there is absolutely no room for error or excuses,” Ambani concluded. “Every single player wearing the blue and white jersey on Saturday understands that only a victory keeps our championship dream alive.”
