NPS condemns harassment of traffic officer in Nakuru

The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned the harassment of a female traffic police officer by a fellow officer in Nakuru County after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NPS said the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 6, while the officer was carrying out her traffic duties within Nakuru County.

According to the police service, preliminary investigations established that the man seen in the viral clip verbally abusing and intimidating the female officer is also a police officer stationed in the same county.

The video shows the female officer being confronted as she attempted to enforce traffic regulations.

“The male motorist seen in the clip, subjecting the female traffic officer to verbal abuse, intimidation, and actions undermining her lawful authority, has been confirmed as a police officer based in the same county,” NPS said in the statement.

The police service strongly condemned the conduct, terming it unlawful and contrary to the values expected of officers.

“The National Police Service condemns this behaviour in the strongest possible terms. Such conduct is not only unlawful but also directly contradicts the core values of professionalism, discipline, respect and integrity for which the NPS stands,” NPS said.

The service added that no officer, regardless of gender or rank, should face harassment while carrying out lawful duties. It further stated that the actions displayed in the clip do not reflect the standards, training or code of conduct of the service.

“We are a service built on honour, courage and mutual respect both among our members and towards the public we serve,” the statement said.

The NPS confirmed that disciplinary and corrective measures had already been initiated against the officer involved.

While condemning the incident, the service also praised the female traffic officer for maintaining professionalism during the confrontation.

“We further commend the female officer for her composure, bravery and commitment to duty despite the provocation. Her conduct exemplifies the professional standards expected of every police officer in Kenya,” NPS stated.

The service further reminded all officers of their obligation to uphold professionalism in their interactions with colleagues and members of the public.

“All officers of the National Police Service are reminded to carry out their duties professionally and to serve the public with the appropriate attitude, decorum and discipline,” the statement added.

The NPS reiterated its commitment to addressing misconduct within its ranks, saying it remains focused on eliminating indiscipline, harassment and other forms of misconduct.

“The National Police Service reassures the public of its continued commitment to eradicating indiscipline, harassment and any form of misconduct within our ranks,” Nyaga said.

Members of the public were encouraged to report cases of misconduct through police stations, emergency numbers 999 and 911, or anonymously through the #FichuaKwaDCI platform.
