West Pokot farmers benefit from maize seed programme

More than 15,000 small-scale farmers in West Pokot have benefited from a maize seed distribution programme aimed at boosting household food security and increasing agricultural productivity.

A similar initiative in neighbouring Trans Nzoia county has also supported thousands of farmers, helping to raise maize production under a programme led by Governor George Natembeya.

In West Pokot, Governor Simon Kachapin launched the initiative at Chelang’a Gardens in Makutano, saying it is designed to support farmers with certified maize seed for timely planting and improved yields.

He said many low-income farmers struggle to afford farm inputs and would now benefit from the county’s intervention.

Kachapin urged farmers to adopt proper agronomic practices, including early land preparation, correct spacing and regular weeding, while utilising extension services at the ward level.

He also emphasised accountability in the distribution process, directing that seeds reach intended beneficiaries.

“I have directed my officers to ensure only the targeted farmers receive the maize seeds to help uplift low-income families,” he said.

Under the programme, the county is distributing 7,690 bales of certified maize seed—equivalent to 184,560 kilogrammes—comprising DH04 and 6213 varieties. Distribution will be carried out to the village level to enhance accessibility.

Deputy Governor Robert Komolle said the initiative targets vulnerable households, with the aim of boosting maize production, improving food availability and enabling families to generate surplus for income.

The county is also promoting crop diversification through a large-scale fruit tree programme. A central nursery in Kapenguria ward is producing seedlings including avocado, mango, coffee and macadamia.

During the launch, farmers received 1,000 avocado seedlings, 800 mango seedlings and 3,000 coffee seedlings.

The nursery currently holds more than 400,000 avocado seedlings, 160,000 mango seedlings, 174,000 coffee seedlings and more than 7,400 macadamia seedlings.

County executive committee member for agriculture Wilfred Longironyang said farmers are increasingly embracing diversification and commercial agriculture, contributing to improved livelihoods and economic growth.

“We are encouraging farmers to grow high-value crops for income while maintaining maize for food and commercial purposes,” he said.
