The intersection of Kenyan politics and urban culture reached a new peak over the Easter weekend. Former Chief Justice and United Green Movement presidential candidate, David Maraga, shared a rare emotional reaction on social media after being honoured on stage by a popular artist.
The retired Chief Justice expressed deep gratitude after spotting Captain Charisma, also known as @luhyaheat, performing in a custom-made t-shirt bearing his likeness.
The moment has since sparked significant conversation regarding the “Maraga 2027” movement and the role of artists in national leadership discussions.
The Symbolic Wardrobe Choice
During a high-energy performance in front of thousands, Captain Charisma took to the stage wearing a white sleeveless t-shirt. The front of the garment featured a prominent black-and-white portrait of David Maraga with the bold text “MARAGA 2027” printed directly beneath it.

The back of the shirt carried its own message, identifying the artist as part of the “MARAGANG” alongside the hashtag #TUKO KADI. This public display of support comes at a time when the “Ukatiba Ndio Tiba” movement is gaining traction across different generations.
A Presidential Candidate’s Response
David Maraga did not let the gesture go unnoticed. Taking to his official account on X, the former Chief Justice retweeted the artist’s post with a message that resonated with many followers. He noted that the act “moved me deeply,” highlighting the significance of the timing during the Easter period.
“On Easter weekend, a time of renewal and hope, you chose to wear our message on your chest, in front of thousands. That is not a small thing,” Maraga wrote.
Maraga’s response emphasised a growing sense of national awareness. He stated that Kenya is “waking up” and that the demand for justice and honest leadership is now cutting across every stage and generation.
The Movement Beyond the Individual
For Maraga, the tribute was less about his personal image and more about the values the movement represents. In his statement, he praised Captain Charisma for his integrity and for using his voice to stand with the cause.
“Kenya is watching. Kenya is waking up. And when artists of your integrity and voice stand with this movement, it tells our people that the demand for justice and honest leadership cuts across every stage, every generation,” he added.

He concluded his message with a call to the artist to continue “making music that matters,” reaffirming that the current political and social movement is bigger than any single individual.
The Maraga 2027 Context
David Maraga, who served as Kenya’s 14th Chief Justice, is widely remembered for his landmark ruling in 2017. Since transitioning into the political sphere with the United Green Movement, his brand has been heavily associated with the hashtag #UkatibaNdioTiba, which translates to the constitution is the cure.
The “Maraga 2027” campaign appears to be leveraging this reputation for judicial integrity to appeal to a younger, justice-oriented electorate.
