After four years away from the national stage, Kisumu Day High School boys’ hockey team is relishing a return to the spotlight, carrying renewed ambition and belief.
The Nyanza region champions are not just back to participate—they are aiming for the finals and a place at the East African stage. Kisumu Day’s target is clear: qualify for the Federation of East African Schools Sports Association games set for Morogoro, Tanzania.
Their return to nationals comes with memories of past glory, having lifted the FEASSA title in 2017 in Gulu, Uganda—a milestone they are eager to revisit. Their last appearance at the nationals was in 2022 in Nakuru, where they exited at the group stage, but this time, the team looks more prepared and determined to go further.
Head coach Odhiambo has been working to rebuild a strong and competitive side ahead of the tournament, focusing on sharpening key areas of play. He noted that the team has been improving its counterattacking approach, which he identified as a weakness during the regional championships.
His confidence in the squad reflects the progress made in training as they gear up for the bigger challenge. Kisumu Day heads into the nationals on a high after reclaiming the Nyanza regional title at Maseno University, where they dethroned Our Lady of Mercy Ringa Boys with a convincing 2-0 victory. That result has boosted belief within the team as they prepare to face top competition from across the country.
The National Term One Games, sponsored by Brookside Dairies, will be held in Kisumu from April 5 to 11, with hockey matches hosted at Kisumu Day. Kisumu Day has been drawn in a challenging Pool A alongside Alliance High School, St Anthony’s Boys Kitale, and Mbooni Boys High School.
Pool B features strong sides, including Friends School Kamusinga, Hospital Hill High School, St Charles Lwanga School, and Ringa Boys. Coach Odhiambo has acknowledged the difficulty of the group, noting that all teams are regional champions and none can be taken lightly.
Despite playing at home, he has downplayed any perceived advantage, insisting that performance will be the key factor. He maintains that the team is ready to compete strongly and represent Nyanza with pride as they chase a return to East African glory.
