Okere wants total focus in Tusker’s last 7 for the season

As the FKF Premier League (FKF-PL) enters its crucial final stretch, table-toppers Tusker FC are staying grounded under coach Charles Okere, who has urged his squad to remain focused despite the title battl3 heat.Tusker reclaimed top spot on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened Nairobi City Stars at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos. Their rise was aided by Police FC’s 1-0 defeat to Ulinzi Stars a day earlier.

Okere, who was promoted from Tusker Youth to replace former tactician Robert ‘Lion’ Matano, is seeking his first league title as Head Coach. However, he was part of the technical bench that led the Brewers to the 2021–2022 championship.

Despite their position at the apex, Okere remains cautious.

“It’s too early to talk about winning the title or say we’re in a pole position. That kind of talk can easily derail us. Right now, the focus is on taking it one game at a time and maintaining our concentration,” he stated.

Earlier in the season, Okere was critical of his team’s inability to maintain leads — citing instances where Tusker let 2-0 advantages slip. However, he now commends the team’s improved game management.

“We’ve matured. Against Bidco United, Posta Rangers, and Ulinzi Stars, we scored early and saw out the matches. Apart from the Mara Sugar game, where we conceded a late equalizer, our ability to manage games has really improved,” he noted.

The coach also highlighted the significance of their home ground advantage at Kenyatta Stadium, where they remain unbeaten in 2025.

“Playing at home has really boosted our confidence. We’re yet to lose here this year. Last weekend, we scored in the 4th minute through Dennis ‘Decha’ Wanjala and held on — something we struggled with earlier in the season,” Okere added.

With seven matches remaining, the Brewers are embracing a measured approach to the title run-in.

“This league is a marathon. One poor result can completely change the landscape. We’re focusing on consistency and treating every game like a final,” Okere emphasised.

Looking ahead to their upcoming clash against Mathare United, Okere remained respectful of their opponents.

“We’re playing Mathare away, and we’re going for a win. But I’ve reminded the boys not to underestimate them. They may not be fighting relegation, but they’re still a dangerous team with quality. We must be sharp,” he warned.

The 13-time champions lead the standings with 51 points from 27 matches — two points ahead of defending champions Gor Mahia, who are level with Police FC but rank second due to a superior goal difference.
