MP Mohammed Ali: There’s no harm having Rigathi Gachagua as my friend

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali, widely known as Jicho Pevu,  has said he is free to interact with everyone, including Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He made the remarks on Monday even as he hinted at quitting the UDA party, citing differences with a section of the leadership.

The MP claimed there were plans to block him from running on the party’s ticket during the 2027 general elections.

Ali said he was being attacked by UDA officials who, he said, claimed he had close links with Former DP Gachagua.

“In the texts, they are calling me that guy for Wamunyoro, that’s me. There is no harm in having a friend. Rigathi Gachagua was part and parcel of our team. He campaigned for UDA. He was our Deputy President,” he said.

“He has been impeached; he is out there continuing with his politics. There is no one who is going to stop me from talking to him and having a cup of tea with him.”

His remarks come days after he announced that he and his political team would not participate in the grassroots elections, citing a lack of inclusivity in the election process.

He voiced concerns over the sidelining of those who helped the party grow to what it has become.

“UDA, like any other political party, belongs to the people, not any single individual, regardless of their position,” he stated.

This is not the first time the MP has hinted at working with Gachagua.

In October 2024, the legislator said he was one of the lawmakers who failed to sign the impeachment motion against the ex-DP.

“I have carefully read the charges in the impeachment motion against the Deputy President. In good faith, I do not support this cause of action and find it ill-intentioned, seeking to demonise a public servant who has contributed immensely to this great country,” he said.
