‘I love this club’ – Van Dijk hints at Liverpool stay

Virgil van Dijk expressed his love for Liverpool and his pride at being the club’s captain as he hinted at extending his contract after scoring a late winner to beat West Ham 2-1 on Sunday.

The Dutchman’s current deal expires at the end of the season, but reports have suggested he is close to joining Mohamed Salah in signing a new contract.

Van Dijk was not at his imperious best at the back as he and Andy Robertson combined to gift West Ham an equaliser four minutes from time.

But he quickly made amends by powering in Alexis Mac Allister’s corner to open up a 13-point lead for the Reds at the top of the table.

Liverpool need a maximum of six points from their remaining six games and could seal the title as early as next weekend if results go their way.

“I am very proud to captain my 100th game for Liverpool,” Van Dijk told Sky Sports when questioned over his future.

“That was the main focus, get three points and a step closer to all of our dreams. Not just us as players and staff but everyone connected to Liverpool FC.

“Everyone knows I love this club and let’s see what next week will look like.”

Salah encouraged his long-time team-mate to stay put at Anfield after ending speculation over his future by agreeing a two-year deal.

“I’m glad to do that early before the end of the season and hopefully Virgil will be next,” said Salah. “I would love to see him again here next year.”
