Kenya Power Company is set to commence the construction of a power substation at Bar Opuk village in Bondo subcounty after getting approval of members of the public to set up the project in the area.

Speaking during an interview with Kenya News Agency, Siaya County Kenya Power Maintenance and Operation Manager Mr. Bernard Ochieng Kaudo revealed that the project would be established at a cost of Sh50 million.

“This is a step-down power substation which will transform 33kv power to 11kv, and now that we already have public land to establish the project, it will cost just slightly above Sh50 million,” Kaudo said.

He explained that the Bondo substation would solve perennial outages and interruptions of electricity supply to Bondo town and its environs.

“Bondo town and its environs have been experiencing a lot of blackouts and power interruptions because of lack of a power substation. This will be a thing of the past with the newly established facility,” Kaudo said.

He added that the new substation would also enable the company to connect more customers to the power grid, which was not possible without a substation in the region.

The Maintenance and Operations Manager disclosed that the Bondo facility would be the fourth in the county after Rang’ala, Nyamninia, and Siaya substations, which contribute to stabilising power in the region.

He thanked the public for approval of the project and allowing it to be established in Bar Opuk, saying it would come with enormous benefits for the locals.

Kaudo asked the youth in the area to turn up and be engaged in manual jobs during the construction of the facility set to commence in April.
