This month marks the 22nd death anniversary of legendary Kenyan musician Issah Mmari Wangui, popularly known as E-Sir.
E-Sir was a star, his talent shining brightly for a span of 3 years before his life was sadly cut short in a tragic accident on March 16, 2003. Speaking with Dr. Kiongori alongside veteran singer Nameless, E-Sir’s younger brother Habib revealed that the artist knew his time was coming up days before the grisly accident that claimed his life.
Habib eulogized his brother as an amazing human being who was always so deeply rooted in everything he loved.

Recounting the days leading to E-Sir’s death, Habib revealed that his brother’s demeanor had changed and he spoke of life in a deeper way constantly referencing the fact that “things were about to change” in their conversations. This to Habib at the time, sounded like just ambiguous ramblings of a big brother who wanted you to take life more seriously or follow better steps.

According to him, he never understood the things his brother meant by his words until the fateful morning when he received the terrible news of E-Sir’s passing.

“I can say he was prepared, he knew it was coming,” Habib, who followed his brother’s footsteps and joined the music industry as well shared during his sit down with Dr. Kingori.

He went on to recount how back in the day, he used to assist his brother with his art by either his packing signed CDs for him and other minor things in the studio. Due to this, he knew about his brother’s upcoming trip to Nakuru for a concert he was headlining. Habib badly wanted to travel with his brother however, E-Sir adamantly refused to tag the young boy with him

According to E-Sir, Habib needed to remain home and keep their mom company.

Habib candidly told Kingori, “As I was helping him fix the CDs, and even as he planned to go to Nakuru, I remember telling him that I wanted to accompany him on the trip. I wanted so much to, but he told me ‘No stay behind and look after mom,” noting that E-Sir had just finished recording his hit album ‘Nimefika’ which he planned on releasing in April.

That whole, “look after mom,” is one of those premonitions E-Sir shared that didn’t really make sense to Habib.
The late E-Sir

E-sir had initially told Habib not to touch his items and the young boy wouldn’t stop whining about it as his brother’s fits were always so sic.

‘He told me, why are you crying over stuff like this and one day they will all be yours,” Habib candidly shared. Adding upon asking for further clarification, the late rapper simply stated, “Hizi zote ni zako, but hautajua kitu ya kufanya nazo. Mpaka uelewe uchungu ya kuzipata.”

This translates to, “all these are yours and at some point you won’t even know what to do with them at the moment when it will hit you with pain, the loss you had to go through to attain them,”

Habibn shrugged off his brother’s words and as soon as E-sir left for Nakuru, Habib and his then-music partner Manga went out on a Saturday evening with Habib donning his brother’s clothes even though he knew he wasn’t supposed to.

After partying, he returned home and quickly washed E-Sir’s clothes, hang them to dry, as he knew his brother would be back that morning. However, that would not be the case as that morning fellow artiste Big Pin arrived at their home while in tears, bearing the heartbreaking news of E-Sir’s passing.
