Comedian Professor Hamo has opened up about the financial and emotional turmoil he faced after his affair with fellow comedian Jemutai went public. Prof Hamo said that his affair with Jemutai led to him losing KSh 14 million. How did prof Hamo become broke? In an interview on the Mic Cheque Podcast, Hamo reflected on how his life unravelled following the scandal, leading to massive financial losses. The comedian, who was in his late 30s at the time, admitted that the affair’s public fallout left him with shattered brand partnerships and a tarnished reputation. Hamo explained how, during this period, money had been flowing in, but bad decisions led him down a dark path, which worsened after the scandal surfaced.
‘ “I was in my 30s na pesa inaingia, and so nilifanya decisions mbaya mbaya. After the scandal happened, online, nobody cared if it was true or lies. It all crumbled, and all of a sudden I lost a lot of deals. Nobody wanted to associate with me. I lost deals amounting to like KSh 14 million,” Hamo revealed. Hamo recalled how agencies he worked with pulled out of partnerships and stopped taking his calls, including opportunities that he had already secured for the future. “It was that serious. I lost money that I was looking forward to getting and also the name, that’s the brand which was everything,” he shared. How did Hamo rebuild his career? Despite hitting rock bottom, Hamo explained how he began rebuilding his life and career, crediting his wife and faith in God as the key factors in his recovery.
“When my name ilikuwa imechapa mangori huku nje, I knew God had given me an opportunity to start over. However, what hurt me the most was that I hurt my wife and she had even never wronged me.” Prof Hamo recounts his wife standing by him after his love scandal with Jemutai. According to Hamo, his wife Zipporah, played a crucial role in helping him regain focus. She stood by him during the difficult times, refusing to air their personal struggles on social media. Instead, she encouraged him to return to God, which Hamo said led to his comeback. “She told me she wasn’t going to fight this war on social media. She asked me what we would be fighting for on social media. She urged me to return to God, and I did. She had already started noticing that I was failing into a hole when I opened up to her about my troubles,” Hamo said. Hamo explained that his relationship with his wife was pivotal in his recovery, and he was grateful for her unwavering support. “I can’t imagine living my life without her. There are times I didn’t know what to do, but she would tell me to relax, and then I would wake up with an epiphany,” he added.
In the past, he had admitted that greed led him to cheat. Reflecting on the affair, Hamo acknowledged that while it was a key factor in his downfall, it also allowed him to heal from other personal struggles, including his battles with drug use. He also became a father. “It helped me become a father and heal from issues I had been battling,” Hamo said.
