Nyeri: Grief as Baby Succumbs to Injuries After Falling from 2-Storey Building

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into the tragic and mysterious death of a one-and-a-half-year-old baby in Nyeri County. The baby’s parents claimed she was okay and was even getting back to her usual routine.  According to her parents, Kylan Arizona Princess sustained injuries after rolling down a flight of stairs at their home in Mweiga in late January. However, conflicting details and disturbing medical findings have cast doubt on the circumstances leading to her untimely demise. How did Kylan get injured Kylan’s mother, Tanasha Stella, said she had briefly left the house to buy milk from a nearby shop, only to return and find her baby lying helplessly on the floor. “She was swollen, and I came and did first aid here.

She was okay,” Stella recounted. Her father, who was also present, said they took care of her at home, and she seemed to recover, even resuming play. “We tried to take care of her a bit here at home, and she got better and started playing again. So I don’t know if she was hurt internally or not. And in the evening, they cooked, ate, and I went to work. The following day, I woke the child up, and she was okay,” he said but three days later, Kylan’s condition worsened. Her parents rushed her to Mweiga Health Center at around 11pm, where medical officers noted she had severe head injuries, a swollen face, and breathing difficulties. The child was immediately referred to Mary Immaculate Hospital for specialised treatment. When was Nyeri infant declared dead Upon arrival at Mary Immaculate, medical personnel quickly assessed the child, but the outcome was devastating. “When we arrived at Mary Immaculate, we placed the child on the bed in the emergency room.

The doctor touched her and said, “Okay,” then went back to get the machine to check her heartbeat. The doctor checked the first time and remained silent, just standing there. After the second check, he told us, “Sorry, your child has passed away,” the father painfully recalled. Dr John Muchoki, who examined the baby on January 26, confirmed that she had already succumbed by the time she was brought in. “The baby was noted to have multiple injuries that were at different stages of healing which is suggestive of a possible battered child syndrome,” Muchoki stated. The doctor’s findings raised questions about the nature of Kylan’s injuries and reported that she had bruises on unexpected areas, including her inner thighs and abdomen, which led him to suspect prolonged physical abuse. “So we examined together the baby myself and the clinician and we also noted that she had multiple injuries at areas that you don’t expect to find injuries.

That is the inner thigh and the abdomen and they were actually at different intervals of healing. We questioned the parents about the injuries and they were not able to give us any conclusive answers. The history of having brought the baby three days after the fall was also not consistent with what we would expect,” he added. Will Baby Kylan get justice Following these revelations, hospital authorities reported the case to the police and the children’s office. The Directorate of Children’s Services (DCS) is now demanding justice for the child.  “The interest of the Directorate of Children’s Services is the justice of this child. We want to establish, we want to know the cause of the death of the child so that the child can be served with justice and this one will be well informed by the post-mortem report,” a DCS official stated. Kylan’s body has been lying at Mary Immaculate Hospital for 12 days and her parents are demanding its release for burial, citing their inability to raise the KSh 5,000 required for a post-mortem examination at Nyeri Referral Hospital. However, the police insist that an autopsy must be conducted to determine the cause of death, given the suspicious injuries found on her body. “The matter is being investigated by the DCI Keini West and they can confirm that the investigations are at an advanced stage. Save for the post-mortem, we shall be done soonest,” a police officer stated.
