The release of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results has brought to light extraordinary tales of resilience and determination. Brian Otucho missed three consecutive academic terms due to mental health challenges. Among them is the inspiring story of Brian Otucho, a 15-year-old from Riana village, who overcame immense challenges to emerge as one of the top-performing students in the country.  The atmosphere in the home was characterised by songs of praise and prayer as Otucho’s family and friends gathered to honour his hard work.

Otucho’s success has captured the hearts of many, as he managed to score an A plain despite missing almost a year of school due to mental health struggles. His remarkable achievement is proof of the power of perseverance and faith, celebrated by family and friends in a jubilant gathering at his home. How was Otucho’s days in school Raised by a single mother, Otucho’s journey to success was far from smooth sailing, as others might assume. His passion for academics was evident from an early age, with a strong ambition to become a pilot.

However, his dreams were temporarily derailed when he faced mental health challenges in Form Three, forcing him to take nearly a year off school. The journey has been tough, but God has pulled me through. It was a difficult time because of that illness challenge, but then God was there and fought for me,” Otucho narrated, reflecting on his struggles. Despite the setback, Otucho’s determination remained unshaken and with unwavering support from his family and his faith in God, he returned to school and gave his all.
