The National Police Service (NPS) will commence the recruitment of new officers after a two-year freeze, with a key focus on onboarding cadet officers. Interior PS Raymond Omollo said some of the reforms had been implemented. The move, set to take place in the second half of 2025, is part of ongoing efforts to improve the service and address long-standing gaps identified in police operations. Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Raymond Omollo revealed that the recruitment is aligned with the recommendations of the National Task Force on Police Reforms, which was chaired by former chief justice David Maraga.
Omollo stated that the decision to recruit cadet officers was prompted by the need to address specific issues within the police service, particularly the human resources aspect. According to the PS, this move will enable officers to join the police ranks at varying levels, rather than all joining at the same entry level, which has been the case in the past. “There are issues around human resources that we must do. There are issues around human rights that we must undertake, and even proposals to re-introduce the hiring of Cadet officers so that not everybody who joins the rank and file of the national police must join at the same level. All these are geared towards addressing some of the gaps that you are mentioning,” explained the PS.
