Morara Kebaso: KRA Goes after Ruto’s Online Critic for Filing Nill Returns Despite KSh 186m Income

Morara Kebaso, a political activist and online critic of President William Ruto, is under scrutiny by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for alleged tax evasion. KRA stated that Morara has failed to pay taxes amounting to KSh 27 million over the past three years.

According to a report by NTV, KRA mentioned that the political activist earned over KSh 186 million through his businesses but filed nil returns annually. The tax notice indicates that five companies, including Morara Home Furniture, Morara Properties Limited, Luku Fashion, Igrow Digital Enterprise, and Backtent Security Limited, are under investigation. KRA has also listed six motor vehicles owned by the 2027 presidential aspirant, including a Land Cruiser pickup, a Land Cruiser Prado, a Captain Tuk Tuk, a TVS motorcycle, a Renault van, and a Volkswagen Passat.

The authority also noted that Morara has been receiving funds in his personal account, primarily via M-Pesa, which were reportedly meant to cover costs for interior fittings and furniture. In his defence, the activist denied the tax evasion allegations and presented two tax compliance certificates for 2023 and 2024, issued to him by KRA. This comes days after Morara admitted to receiving KSh 6 million from Kenyan well-wishers who supported his activism.
