Police in Runyenjes, Embu county have launched investigations into a shooting incident involving a police officer from Nthagaiya Police Post. Citizen Digital reported that a police officer allegedly shot and killed one man and injured another on Saturday, November 9, at a popular bar in Ugweri Market.

Preliminary reports indicate the tragic incident happened when the officer, accompanied by a colleague, entered Vision Joint and attempted to disperse patrons. Witnesses said the officer opened fire after some of the revellers who opposed his move to order them out. Catherine Nyaga, mother of the deceased, the officer is said to have shot her son, 43-year-old Ephantus Muriithi Nyaga, in the head, resulting in his immediate death.

The devasted mother claimed both officers appeared to be intoxicated at the time of the shooting incident.  Police said the second victim was shot in the neck and was rushed to Embu Level 5 Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. The body of Ephantus Muriithi has been moved to the hospital’s mortuary even as the two officers were disarmed to allow for investigations.
