Nyandarua Senator John Methu has made a bold grooming pledge. He has vowed not to shave his beard until after the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s JKL show on Wednesday night, the Senator confirmed he is counting down exactly 17 months to the next general election.
The Senator appeared on the bench alongside colleagues Richard Onyonka and Tom Ojienda. He explained that his rugged look is a symbol of political defiance.
Methu, once a staunch supporter of the President, told host Jeff Koinange that he is confident he will be “neat” again by August 2027 after his factions defeats that one led by the president to ascend to power.
A Promise in the Mirror
Senator Methu’s refusal to shave is tied directly to his prediction for the 2027 polls. During the interview, he expressed a firm belief that the electorate is ready for a change at the top.
“I am very confident that I will become neat in the next 17 months because I have moved around this country… they told me they would remove him.”
Methu noted that his travels to the Coast, Mount Kenya, and Nyanza have convinced him that the ground has shifted. He maintains that the beard will stay until his goal of a “one-term presidency” for the incumbent is realised.
From Loyal Ally to Vocal Critic
The Senator’s current stance is a sharp departure from his earlier political career. Methu was elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket. He previously served as a key coordinator for the “Tangatanga” movement.
The “United Alternative” Path
Methu is now a key figure in the United Alternative faction. This group includes followers of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP).
Despite his public fallout with the UDA leadership, Methu has refused to resign his seat. He argued that his mandate comes from the people of Nyandarua, not the party.
As the countdown to 2027 continues, Senator Methu remains one of the most visible faces of the opposition wing. For now, the beard remains a permanent fixture of his political identity.
