A Meru teacher has excited his students after showing up to work clad in their full school unform, to motivate them and also resonate with their experiece as high school learners. The Meru students were stunned to see their teacher in uniform. Teacher Fabian, a Chemistry teacher the Gikurune Boys High School, wore the student’s while shirt with the school’s logo, their trousers and green tie, and even spent the day hanging out with the learners. Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Fabian said he wanted the students to also learn more about the struggles he underwent to get to where he is today, adding that their reaction to his uniform amazed him. “Their reaction was overwhelming. They received it well very happy and because my journey has not been smooth that’s why I decided to wear it to motivate my students,” he said. Fabian said he explained to his students how he had drop out of school in the course of his life due to financial struggles, and also juggled as watchman by night and teacher by day, just to get where he is. “The theme was ‘walking in my shoes’. I told them that I wore the uniform on on purpose to tell them tht I understand their their journey because I was once like them,” he added.
To the teacher, donning the student’s uniform was a way of relating to their lives, hope, teenage pressures and future aspirations. He spent the day motivating the students, urging them to study hard, and go for their dreams like he did. “Basically, I wore this uniform today so that when they see me tomorrow dressed in my normal outfit, they can also dress like their future,” the teacher reiterated. Teacher Fabian’s journey to success The teacher narrated that he dropped out of school in 1999 due to lack of school fees and started doing menial jobs until 2009 when he started working as a security guard. He then joined an adult learning centre in 2014, and sat for his KCSE in 2016. “I joined campus 2017, then graduated 2022, all this time working as a guard then being employed 2024 by TSC,” he said, adding it was important to him for students to learn about his journey. Teacher Fabian’s students amused by his uniform When he showed up in school, many students were amused, with others teasing him, asking for his admission number, and his dormitory. The teacher also joined the students’ Chemistry group discussion and interacted with them.
