Police in Kisumu Central Sub-county have arrested Kibuye Market chairlady Judith Matengo, popularly known as Nyaramba, after a viral video showed her attacking two female traders with a wooden rod. The incident happened in Kisumu. Nyaramba was apprehended on Monday night, November 17, while hiding within the market precincts, shortly after the footage sparked public outrage. Who did Nyaramba beat at Kibuye Market? In the video, she was seen violently clashing with the women as bystanders looked on. The victims, Mercy Okoth and Rozette Adhiambo, sustained soft-tissue injuries during the broad-daylight incident and later sought treatment at Lumumba Sub-county Hospital. They both recorded statements with the police, who confirmed they were pursuing additional suspects believed to have been involved in the attack.
Authorities stated that Matengo would be arraigned on Tuesday, November 18, to face charges related to the attack. However, the cause of the assault remained unknown. What did Joshua Oron say about Kibuye Market attack? Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron condemned the incident, describing it as unacceptable and a betrayal of public trust. He stressed that intimidation and violence had no place in the community and urged authorities to take swift action against those responsible. “If you must resort to beating traders just to secure support, then you have already lost the trust and confidence of the people. This kind of intimidation has no place in our community, and it must be condemned in the strongest terms possible. I call on all relevant authorities to take immediate action against the perpetrators,” he said. The incident drew widespread condemnation on social media, with many alleging Nyaramba has a history of attacking traders How did Kenyans react after Kibuye assault? Lucy Abwao “Kwani kibuye unakuanga ya Nyaramba?
It’s always nyaramba left, right, and centre, yawa. Kwani, what does she have? Kupiga mama ya mtu ivo? Huyo mama should be dismissed from Kibuye. It’s enough with this Nyaramba thing.” Kennedy Omondi “Ni nini mbaya na watu wa Kibuye. Siasa kila siku. Wawache mamama wafanye biashara.” Akis Nyacounty “Even market leaders must be tamed; authority is not a license for brutality. The woman she was seen beating is someone’s mother out there simply trying to earn her daily bread. My heart aches for the children whose mother returned home with wounds, swelling, and bruises from a hustle meant to feed them.” Charles Onyango Manuar “There was a time the city manager wanted to stop this by removing her; sadly, the city MP decided to support the woman. Now that she is out of his camp, they now see the evil in her.” Nyaramba is filmed fighting two traders with a rod. Photo: Joshua Oron.
