A heated debate is unfolding on X (formerly Twitter) as users are divided over who helped whom become a star, pitting online personality Azziad Nasenya against veteran musician Mejja.
The public discussion was sparked after an online user urged Mejja to help Azziad, following reports that her Ksh25 million apartment was being auctioned.
The controversy highlights the complex relationship between the two stars whose fame became intertwined after Azziad’s viral TikTok dance to the song “Utawezana,” which featured Mejja.

The Rise to Stardom
Azziad Nasenya rose to national fame in April 2020 after her infectious dance to the hit song “Utawezana” went viral across social media platforms.
The video’s popularity helped propel both her and the song to immense success, earning her the title of “Kenya’s TikTok Queen”.
The song, which was a collaboration between Mejja and Femi One, saw a massive surge in popularity, leading to a long-running debate over who deserved credit for the song’s success.
Femi One has previously stated that the song was destined to be a hit with or without Azziad’s video.
Despite this, many social media users credit Azziad for single-handedly making “Utawezana” a household name.
The debate on X took a new turn after reports emerged that Azziad’s Kileleshwa apartment was being auctioned off over a Ksh25 million mortgage.

People’s Reactions
The news has been met with mixed reactions, with some critics accusing her of living beyond her means.
The financial struggles have prompted some users to call on Mejja to assist her in her time of need, leading to the “who helped whom” debate.
“Azziad revived Mejja’s dying career, it’s only right he organizes a fundraiser to return the favor. It’s the least he should do,” a user, @Saddam_KE brought the matter up.
This argument rattled some social media users, who reacted in various ways;
@michaelalexbas: “Do you know what a tiktok trend is? It means she was doing a challenge for the current trend at that time. We already knew the song but we didn’t know her. The trend made us know her.”

@thee_alfa_house: “How about Mejja being the one who began her career?”
@Western_Wolf8: “Azziad used Mejja’s song to climb to fame, Mejja owes her nothing.”
@246_36_254: “Raise funds to pay loan arrears. You must be an idiyooot.”
@AfandeKhende: “Instead of paybills Lets push 4 our systems to work Azziad should be respected, alifungua mlango ya Tiktok na Social Media Industry Shida ya Kenya,we Do not praise our Heroes or Heroines Our Legislators wanatuangusha.”
A History of Financial Controversies
This is not the first time Azziad has faced public scrutiny over her finances. In early 2025, she was accused of faking her luxurious lifestyle and borrowing money without repaying it.
The allegations led to public backlash, and at one point, a “good Samaritan” reportedly stepped in to clear some of her debts to save her from public shame.
In a separate instance, a leaked audio clip allegedly revealed Azziad borrowing Ksh85,000 for a wig, which reignited the conversation around her financial management.
The reports of the auctioning of her apartment are the latest in a series of financial controversies that have plagued the young influencer this year.
While critics question how a 25-year-old could qualify for such a large mortgage, her supporters praise her ambition and risk-taking.
