Source: Facebook President William Ruto is expected to face stiff competition from the opposition, consisting of Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Fred Matiang’i, among others. Despite the opposition’s determination to front one single candidate to face Ruto, Mundalo argues that the president is still the favourite to win the 2027 election.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Mundalo pointed out that Ruto will have an advantage given that African governments have rarely lost elections. He argued that a sitting president always has a monopoly on control of the election, which works against his competitors. “And why does this happen? Because in the first place, African governments always have the monopoly of control of the election. It is one about the commission. Not to say that they might necessarily be interfering with it. “But the reality also is that commissions are appointed by sitting presidents. And number two is that African governments also have a monopoly on public administration. Because, whereas some candidates running for president have to start by having a team together. A sitting head of state has an infrastructure all the way to the chief and Nyumba Kumi. That is being paid for by taxpayers’ money. And already that gives them an edge of an advantage,” Mundalo argued.

The role of Gen Z in shaping the 2027 election outcome Mundalo, a former Jubilee Party youth chairperson, noted that Gen Z will play a crucial role in determining the winner of the upcoming election. He noted that the June 2024 Gen Z revolution, which nearly got the Kenya Kwanza Alliance out of office, might still work to the advantage of the president. According to Mundalo, the revolution happened too early, and the government understands the demands of Gen Z ahead of the next election. He stated that Ruto’s administration will be deliberate in completing projects and fighting corruption as one way of dealing with issues that led to the Gen Z revolution. “And so the government knows the problem. The government knows what things need to be addressed. The government is aware that if we do not do this, then the results will be as the revolution has been able to spell out.

“And that’s why today you can see the government getting very intentional about the completion of projects. Very intentional about fighting corruption. Very intentional about the promises that they actually made,” he argued. Mundalo further stated that the current opposition leaders are disorganised and too selfish for them to agree on a single candidate. According to Mundalo, the selfish interests of the opposition are higher than their desire to change the country. “Allow me to say that this country also has a very disorganised and dishonest opposition. Where selfish interest in them rides very high. The selfish interest in our opposition is higher than their need to change this country. And that is one of the biggest tragedies that we have,” he said.

The communication expert argued that former Interior Cabinet secretary Matiang’i has high chances of winning the election, but his inability to blend with Gen Z will work against his candidature.  “They do not understand the language of the voter. The Gen Z cried and made their noise about Matiang’i and said he is the one who should be here. But he refuses to even agree with the dress code of the Gen Z. He refuses to even just agree with looking like the candidate for the Gen Z. And that is the language of the voter because elections are not won in boardrooms,” Mundalo said.
