Comedian Eric Omondi has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons after his beloved Manchester United suffered an opening-day defeat against Arsenal.
A die-hard Red Devils supporter, Eric had gone online before the clash, confidently declaring that United would brush aside their rivals.
In a bold gesture, he even promised hefty rewards depending on the result, calling out celebrity Arsenal fans Useful Idioty, Joe Muchiri, and Carol Radull.
The KSh 400,000 Gamble
“I know this is a walkover game. Hii ni game imeisha before ianze…if Arsenal beat Manchester United, you can be sure that I will give you KSh 400,000 each, and you know I keep my word,” he declared confidently.
But the game did not follow his script. Ricardo Caglafiori’s 13th-minute strike, capitalising on a goalkeeping blunder, proved to be the difference as United slumped to a 1-0 defeat.
Despite dominating large spells, United’s appeals for penalties were waved away, leaving fans frustrated.
Arsenal Fans Demand Their Dues
Eric’s silence after the final whistle has not gone unnoticed. The very celebrities he had promised cash rewards were quick to remind him of his pledge.
Joe Muchiri reposted Eric’s initial video with the caption: “Kuna deni hapa Erico (Eric, you have a debt here).”
Carol Radull also pointedly noted his silence, while Useful Idioty went further by posting a video of himself attempting to call Eric, who did not pick up. “Dawa ya deni ni kulipa, Eric Omondi shika simu yangu,” Idioty quipped.
Netizens React with Humour and Mockery
The situation has lit up social media, with Kenyans weighing in with a mixture of humour and mockery.
- i_guess_its_tinnah_: “Si ata nyinyi mmeona adui ni Zambia na Man U.”
- clout_wallace: “Alithani Man U ni Harambee Stars.”
- Mike Mondo: “Well this did not age well.”
Not the First to Gamble on Man United
Eric isn’t the first Kenyan public figure to suffer embarrassment over a Manchester United gamble. In May, former nominated senator Millicent Omanga revealed that she lost a KSh 1 million bet after backing United to beat Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final.
Her hopes quickly evaporated when a goal from Brennan Johnson secured a 1-0 victory for Tottenham. Omanga admitted defeat on social media, sparking a flood of amused reactions, much like Eric’s current predicament.
