REREC earmarks Ksh 1.79B to connect 10,900 households in Mt Kenya

According the corporation, it is currently undertaking a total of 109 rural electrification projects in six counties of Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Murang’a, Marsabit and Nyeri at a total cost of Ksh 1.79 billion.

“”These projects are expected to connect approximately 10,900 households upon completion and are targeted for completion by 31st December 2025,” said the REREC.

In Nyeri County, REREC is targeting to implement a total of 33 rural electrification projects for 2023/24 and 2024/25 fiscal years in Kieni, Mathira, Mukurweini, Nyeri Town, Othaya and Tetu to the tune of Ksh 243.58 million.

The projects in Nyeri County are funded by the both the government of Kenya and development partners and targets to connect 1,754 households upon completion.

“In the financial years 2023/24 and 2024/25, REREC targets to implement a total of 11 electrification projects in Kieni Constituency at an approximate cost of Ksh 153.58 million which will connect 445 new customers upon completion. Part of these funds are from a partnership between REREC and Kieni Constituency through the matching fund program,” it said in a statement.

In Kieni Constituency, New Mweiga Yard & Environs which is being implemented at a cost of Ksh 18.31 million and which has been commissioned by Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira is expected to 112 new customers to the grid.

The energy PS has similarly commissioned the Kandutura Borehole which is funded by the government to the tune of Ksh 22.8 million and will connect 278 new customers.

REREC has earmarked a total of Ksh 145.39 million to implement 30 rural electrification projects for the Financial Years 2023/24 and 2024/25 in Laikipia East, Laikipia North and Laikipia West. The projects will also see 613 new households connected to the grid upon completion later this year.

In the financial years 2023/24 and 2024/25, REREC targets to implement a total of 9 electrification projects in Laikipia North Constituency at an approximate cost of Ksh 45.10 Million which will connect 169 new customers upon completion.

The projects in Laikipia County are also being implemented jointly between the exchequer and the constituencies through the matching fund program.
