The facility, launched on Monday evening, is part of the county’s broader effort to promote youth participation in boxing.

“Last evening, we hit a major milestone in our commitment to nurturing young talent with the launch of a brand-new boxing ring,” the governor announced on his official X account.

“This facility is a huge step forward in developing boxing talent right here in Kisumu.”

The launch comes ahead of the Kisumu vs. Uganda boxers’ tournament scheduled for August 18.

Governor Nyong’o said the county government will provide the local team with complete boxing kits to ensure they are well-prepared for the event.

He also revealed plans to expand the initiative beyond Kisumu City.

“We plan to roll out similar boxing facilities in towns and municipalities across the county,” he said.

Nyong’o added that this would create more opportunities for young people to train and excel in the sport.

Nyong’o emphasised the importance of sports in empowering youth and pledged continued investment in sports infrastructure and support systems.

“Sports are vital in shaping the future of our youth,” he said.

“We will keep investing to make these opportunities possible.”

On July 12, Kisumu County was allocated Sh800 million by the State Department for Sports to upgrade the historic Moi Stadium.

The project, announced by President William Ruto last month during a visit by Kisumu County leaders to State House, has sparked excitement among sports enthusiasts and residents alike.

A team of engineers from the State Department for Sports toured the facility to assess its status and provide advice on the best approach for the upgrade.

“This will be one of the best facilities that will be used not just within Kisumu County, but in the western region and even in East Africa,” Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Sports, Beatrice Odongo, said.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, with the county government working closely with the Ministry of Sports to ensure its timely delivery.
