Comedian Timothy Ndegwa Kimani, popularly known as Njugush, stirred online debate after delivering a biting sarcastic response to recent comments made by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah.
The MP’s controversial remarks came during a heated parliamentary session on Tuesday, June 17, as protests intensified in Nairobi.
The demonstrations, driven by widespread outrage over the death of Albert Ojwang’—who died in police custody—turned chaotic in parts of the capital.
Public anger was further fuelled by a disturbing video that emerged showing a police officer assaulting a hawker and shooting him at close range in broad daylight.
Addressing Parliament, Ichung’wah appeared to defend the actions of police officers, claiming that protesters were provoking armed law enforcement officers.
“I have seen activists in the streets taunting policemen. An armed police officer, and you are taunting them?” he questioned.

He added: “I saw someone the other day in Nakuru brandishing a machete at a police officer. I must commend that officer for keeping his cool. We must also talk to our people—they must treat our policemen with respect, honour, and the dignity they deserve.”
These remarks drew criticism online, including from Njugush, who took to Instagram to voice his disapproval through sarcasm.
“Inasemekana nyinyi ndio mko na shida, you are disrespectful na maji yenyu ya chupa na mask,” he wrote—translated as, “It is said that you are the ones with problems. You are disrespectful with your bottled water and masks.”
The satirical tone of his post reflected the growing frustration many Kenyans feel toward perceived government indifference and police overreach.
Njugush has long used his platform not only for comedy but also to speak on critical societal issues. In 2023, he publicly addressed Kenya’s youth unemployment crisis, urging stakeholders to take meaningful action.
