National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has stirred debate within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) after taking a jab at the party’s secretary-general, Edwin Sifuna. Earlier this week, Mbadi showcased his dedication to community development when he joined other leaders from Homa Bay county to leverage resources for improving infrastructure at Sasi Primary School in Kanyadoto Ward, Ndhiwa Constituency. The February 8 initiative underscored a collective effort to enhance educational facilities in the region, highlighting the importance of leadership beyond politics. Mbadi used the opportunity to dismiss Sifuna’s authority in ODM, recalling how he swiftly unseated former secretary-general Ababu Namwamba.
“You’re still claiming that Sifuna is telling you he owns ODM? Gladys, listen, go and tell Sifuna that the seat he holds—I chased down Ababu and took it from him in just one hour. Him too, we will chase him out,” Mbadi declared, signalling potential tensions within the party. The remarks come at a time when ODM is grappling with significant internal shifts following the formation of a broad-based government. Several ODM MPs have aligned themselves with the Kenya Kwanza administration, raising concerns about the party’s cohesion and survival. Despite these challenges, Edwin Sifuna has been recognised for his unwavering commitment to ODM’s principles.
The secretary-general has remained steadfast in advancing the party’s agenda and steering its policies forward, even as the political landscape becomes increasingly turbulent. The unfolding dynamics within ODM have left many questioning the party’s future, especially in maintaining its influence amidst shifting alliances and emerging power struggles.
