Gladys Shollei Rubbishes Kamket’s Threat To Extend Ruto’s Term: “Maybe People In Village Will Buy”

Uasin Gishu woman representative Gladys Boss Shollei has dismissed Tiaty MP William Kamket’s plot to extend President William Ruto’s term beyond the constitutional limit of two terms. Gladys Boss Shollei said extending President William Ruto’s term beyond two terms is mere crowd-pleasing rhetoric.Kamket had drawn parallels to retired president Daniel Moi’s 24-year rule, sparking debate over Kenya’s presidential term limits.  The MP, speaking at a recent forum, stated that leaders from Baringo county, Moi’s home turf, had the political skill to ensure a presidency that defies limits.  What is Shollei’s take on Kamket’s remarks However, during Citizen TV’s Day Break interview on Tuesday, January 14, Shollei dismissed Kamket’s comments as mere rhetoric meant to stir excitement among crowds. The deputy speaker observed that any attempt to extend Ruto’s term would face significant legal and constitutional hurdles.

She noted that Kamket’s remarks were likely tailored for local audiences unfamiliar with the intricacies of Kenya’s constitutional framework. Shollei dismissed the comments as political posturing, noting that such remarks are common when leaders try to excite public gatherings. “Someone can say that, but as a lawyer, I know that to extend the term limit, you got to change the constitution and it’s no mean fete. You’ve got to go to a referendum. I think trying to make so much out of it; that is just talk that maybe people in the village will buy but I don’t think that someone who knows how our constitution is structured would buy that. This is what you say when you are moving crowds and so on. I don’t think that I would take it so seriously like you people to put it on the news,” Shollei stated.

” Shollei dismissed calls for Ruto to step down The lawmaker further equated the remarks to anti-government slogans and calls for Ruto to vacate office. Shollei argued that such declarations lacked constitutional backing and were unrealistic given Kenya’s governance structure. Terming the reactions to Kamket as over-dramatised, Shollei urged Kenyans to remain grounded in facts and the law and constitutional principles. “I think its just overdramatising it. I think when people mention Ruto must go even those people are just trying to catch headlines because the only way to remove a president is through an election or through impeachment and you have to have the grounds for it; we know that. Not to worry so much,” she added.
