Eyewitnesses have shared the painful moment when a lorry veered from its lane and collided with a matatu full of passengers on the Eldoret-Kitale Highway. Where is the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital? The accident, which occurred on December 3, at 9 am, involved a Great Rift matatu and a lorry. According to eyewitnesses, the Isuzu lorry was headed to Kitale while the matatu had picked up passengers from Matunda Shopping Centre along the highway.
The witnesses said the lorry driver allegedly caused the accident after veering from his lane and colliding head-on with the matatu. Nine passengers and the matatu driver died instantly, while another succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret. “We don’t know what really happened to cause the accident, but we almost lost everyone in that matatu.
Five men and a similar number of women were killed,” said Soi Police Commandant Henry Zuma. What is the state of the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway? “Imagine seeing a lorry hitting a matatu and climbing on top of it, we are in pain,” said Miriam Ongeti, who complained abouit the state of the road. Another road user, David Lumumba, also decried the state of the road, which doesn’t have bumps and is quite narrow. “Even if you try to escape you will just collide with another car,” he said. The lorry driver took off, and police have since launched a manhunt for him.
