Ali Hassan Joho, the nominee for the role of Cabinet Secretary for Mining and Blue Economy, has declared that he is worth KSh 2.3 billion. The former Mombasa governor indicated that his empire comprises several assets and businesses. “I own largely developed and undeveloped property, which includes my homes in Mombasa, Vipingo, Malindi, and Nairobi. Shareholding in some property holdings, shareholding in family businesses, valuables and cash at bank,” he said. He also dismissed allegations that he’s involved in the drug trade, insisting that he does clean business. A renowned fashion head, Joho has a reputation for flaunting his expensive possessions. In one instance while holidaying in the US, he was spotted in a Moncler’s Dincer hooded jacket estimated to cost over KSh 227,000. He posed for the photo while standing beside a sleek Range Rover with the registration plate ‘HAJ,’ which are the initials of his name.
Joho is one of four Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders President William Ruto nominated for his new cabinet. His counterparts are John Mbadi (Treasury), former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs), and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi. The Mombasa politician arrived at Parliament a few minutes before 8 am as the vetting entered day 4. Joho, the first nominee to be vetted, will be one of the five CS nominees to face the vetting panel this Sunday. The others are Oparanya, Alfred Mutua (Labour), Justin Muturi (Public Service) and Stella Lang’at (Gender). Joho admits getting D- in high school Addressing concerns about his academic credentials, Joho explained that his educational journey was delayed due to a challenging financial background. Joho said he had to take a break for one year to transition from primary to secondary school because his parents could not afford school fees. Criticised for receiving a D- grade in his academic past, he acknowledged the criticism but emphasised his current academic pursuits. He is now working towards a Master’s degree at a prestigious university and already holds two bachelor’s degrees.
