The world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, highlighting the need for collective action to end poverty and uphold human rights.
The day raises awareness of how poverty limits access to basic necessities, including adequate housing, social protection and justice.
An estimated 826 million people live in extreme poverty worldwide, while about 3.8 billion lack social protection, according to the United Nations.
Children are among those affected, with many unable to access basic necessities because of poverty. Fair wages and safe working conditions are also essential in promoting dignity and improving livelihoods.
The observance further highlights the importance of listening to people living in poverty and ensuring their experiences and concerns inform efforts to address their needs.
The 2026 theme is “United for Peace and Human Rights: Safe Homes for All”, placing housing, human rights and collective action at the centre of the global campaign.
