Shirleen Wangari Reveals 1st Acting Job and Pay Per Episode

Kenyan actress Shirleen Wangari has opened up about her journey in the entertainment industry, revealing that she landed her first acting job at 18 and earned Sh3,000 per episode.

Wangari shared the details during an exclusive quickfire with Mpasho’s Kalondu Musyimi, where she reflected on her early beginnings, education, childhood and some of the things she enjoys away from the cameras.

Her acting journey started at a young age, with Wangari getting her first job in the industry when she was just 18 years old.

At the time, she earned Sh3,000 per episode — an early income that marked the beginning of what would become her professional acting career.

From those modest beginnings, Wangari has continued to build her profile as an actress, taking on different roles and establishing herself in Kenya’s entertainment scene.

From Ofafa Jericho to the acting industry

Wangari grew up in Ofafa Jericho, Nairobi, before also identifying Kiambere as her upcountry home.

Her childhood and education were therefore rooted in both Nairobi and her connection to the countryside.

Long before pursuing a career in entertainment, Wangari had her own academic strengths and preferences.

She revealed that History was her favourite subject, while Physics was the subject she liked least.

Her academic journey included sitting her KCPE examinations at Maryhill Girls, where she scored an impressive 572 marks.

She later attained a B- in KCSE before proceeding to campus, where she pursued microeconomics.

Her educational background is an interesting contrast to her career in acting, a field that eventually became her professional path.

At 18, Wangari made the move into acting, beginning a journey that would see her earn from her craft and gradually take on bigger opportunities.

From Sh3,000 episodes to bigger dreams

Wangari’s recollection of earning Sh3,000 per episode offers a glimpse into the early stages of her career.

For many young actors, getting the first professional opportunity is an important milestone, regardless of the initial pay.

For Wangari, that opportunity came at a relatively young age and gave her an entry point into an industry she has continued to pursue.

Her story also highlights how entertainment careers can develop gradually, with early opportunities eventually opening the door to more prominent roles.

Away from her career, Wangari has maintained some straightforward personal preferences.

Her favourite meal is ugali na mboga za kienyeji, while githeri is firmly among the foods she likes least.

She is also comfortable in the kitchen and revealed that she can prepare smashed potatoes and stew.

Her daily routine is similarly uncomplicated. Wangari said she normally wakes up at around 7am and goes to sleep at about midnight.

Her taste in cars and life beyond acting

When it comes to cars, Wangari has ambitious tastes.

She named the BMW X6 and Mazda among her dream cars and revealed that she is currently driving a Mazda.

Her answers also showed that she is not particularly interested in revealing everything about her finances. When it comes to her M-Pesa balance, Wangari prefers to keep that information private.
