The Mashujaa Day celebrations to be hosted in Eldoret next month will be used to share successes made in sports, security and in the finance and economic sectors.
Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said several events have been lined up including commissioning of key development projects and sports tournaments that will ensure full inclusion of residents.
Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties will co-host the celebrations on October 20 at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. The stadium is currently under construction.
“All the projects and activities we have lined up are on course and will be completed in good time ahead of Mashujaa Day,” Murkomen said.
He made the remarks during a meeting with security chiefs and leaders from the three counties in Eldoret where the Mashujaa Day sports tournament activities were unveiled.
Governors Jonathan Bii of Uasin Gishu, Stephen Sang (Nandi) and Wisley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet) and MPs and MCAs from the region were present.
President William Ruto will be in the region for a series of activities including launching of completed development projects in the three counties before presiding over the Mashujaa Day event at the Kipchoge Stadium.
The projects to be launched include markets, raids and affordable housing projects that are being completed in Nandi and Eldoret.
Murkomen said about Sh63 million will be used mostly on awards for sports tournaments including football and volleyball along with athletics activities to be held in the three counties.
“Sports will be the best way to ensure that our people will participate and feel they are part and parcel of the Mashujaa Day celebrations,” he said.
Murkomen said the region was hosting Mashujaa Day celebrations when sports sector was receiving the highest attention from the government.
“We now have the massive investment on sports infrastructure by the government in all parts of the country than ever before.”
He said 32 sports facilities especially stadiums were currently under construction across the county adding that the ongoing sports renaissance was not by accident but by consistent planning and financing spearheaded by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Murkomen said the government planned to develop more than 50 sports academies among other projects and initiatives that will directly benefit the youth.
There will also be a sports event to celebrate success in restoration of peace and security in Kerio Valley.
The governors said all plans for the joint Mashujaa Day celebrations were on course and several teams had been put in place to coordinate the various activities.
