Global energy production continues to be driven by a select group of leading nations, with China taking a massive lead in global mineral fuel output in 2024.
Mineral fuels—defined as naturally occurring substances extracted from the earth and used primarily to produce energy—remain a central pillar of global resource extraction.
China firmly dominates the global rankings in the top position, producing an unprecedented 4,813 million metric tons (MMT).
Trailing in second place is the United States, which recorded an output of 2,277 MMT. Russia holds the third spot with 1,459 MMT, while India ranks fourth after generating 1,143 MMT.
The middle tier of top global producers features Indonesia in fifth place with 921 MMT, followed by Australia in sixth position with an output of 615 MMT.
Middle Eastern and North American powers also feature prominently among the top nations: Saudi Arabia takes seventh place with 594 MMT, Canada occupies eighth with 490 MMT, and Iran secures ninth place with 457 MMT.
Closing out the top ten global leaderboard is South Africa, which registered a total production of 234.0 million metric tons in 2024.
Significantly, South Africa stands as the only African nation to earn a spot among the world’s top ten mineral fuel producers.
