Who is ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua?

Rigathi Gachagua served as the country’s second Deputy President from 2022 until his impeachment in October 2024, becoming the first holder of the office to be removed through that process.

Following his exit, Kithure Kindiki was appointed to replace him.

Gachagua has since repositioned himself in national politics and now leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), from where he has emerged as one of the government’s most outspoken critics.

Before becoming Deputy President, Gachagua represented Mathira Constituency in the National Assembly between 2017 and 2022.

His public service career stretches back several decades, having worked as a District Officer before rising through the civil service.

He also served as Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs and National Heritage, as well as a personal assistant to then Cabinet Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and later to the Head of the Public Service.

Academically, Gachagua graduated from the University of Nairobi in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Literature.

While at the university, he led the Nyeri District University Students Association. He also holds an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration.

He is married to Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, and together they have two sons.
