Tyler Onyangohas joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer after bringing his long association with Everton to an end.
The 23-year-old midfielder impressed during his trial with the Championship club, including a pre-season friendly against Oldham Athletic, and has now been handed a three-year contract.Born in Luton on 4 March 2003, Onyango joined Everton’s academy at the age of eight and spent more than a decade at the club.
He progressed through the youth ranks before making his senior debut as a 17-year-old in Everton’s FA Cup victory over Sheffield Wednesday in January 2021.

The 1.96-metre midfielder made three Premier League appearances during the 2021/22 season, all as a substitute. He also gained experience away from Goodison Park, including a loan spell with League One side Burton Albion.
Everton renewed his contract in 2022 before sending him to Burton for the season. The club’s then director of football Kevin Thelwell praised his development and said the loan would provide valuable first-team experience.
Loans and injury setbacks
Onyango’s progress was interrupted by injuries during his development.
He later spent time with Stockport County, with his 2024/25 loan ending early after a hamstring problem. He returned to Everton but remained outside the first-team picture. Stockport’s loan records show he made 10 appearances before returning to his parent club.
Everton confirmed in June that Onyango was among the Under-21 players whose contracts would expire at the end of the 2025/26 season. That left him free to find another club.
His move to Wednesday therefore represents an opportunity to establish himself at senior level after years of development in one of England’s established academies.
Kenya option remains
Onyango is also of interest to Kenyan football because he has a Kenyan father and an English mother.
He has represented England at youth level, including at Under-18 level, but has never played for the senior England side. His eligibility for Kenya remains significant as he continues his professional career.
“I am eligible to play for Kenya and it is definitely something I’d be open to.”
Those were Onyango’s words in an earlier interview, when he explained that he had visited Kenya several times and remained open to the possibility of representing the country.
For now, his focus will be on Sheffield Wednesday.
The move gives the tall, versatile midfielder — capable of playing in central or defensive midfield and also at centre-back — another opportunity to turn the promise shown at Everton’s academy into a sustained senior career.
