Radio Jambo presenter Joseph Ogidi, popularly known as Gidi, has shared a personal story about a difficult chapter in his life that left him without a home and the money he had spent on rent.
Speaking on The Power Narrative podcast, the veteran radio host recalled being forced to leave a house in Lang’ata after a disagreement with his then-girlfriend, despite having contributed to paying the rent.
According to Gidi, the rental agreement had been registered in his girlfriend’s name. At the time, he did not consider the arrangement a problem because they were living together as a couple.
However, the situation changed after their relationship ended.
“The lease was in her name. When things fell apart, I had no legal claim to the house even though I had paid rent,” Gidi recalled.
He explained that he was left with nowhere to stay and had to begin looking for another house, effectively losing the money he had already committed to the rental property.
A Lesson on Rental Agreements
During the interview, Gidi said the experience taught him the importance of understanding tenancy agreements and ensuring both partners are protected when sharing financial responsibilities.
He noted that many young couples often move in together without discussing ownership, tenancy rights or what would happen if the relationship came to an end.
“You can pay for months, but if your name is nowhere on the agreement, you may leave with nothing,” he said.
Kenya’s rental market largely operates through tenancy agreements signed between landlords and tenants.
In many cases, only the person whose name appears on the lease is recognised as the legal tenant, making disputes difficult for partners whose names do not appear on the agreement.

Gidi’s revelation sparked conversations online, with many Kenyans saying they had gone through similar experiences while living in Nairobi.
