Three key duels that could decide World Cup winner

The biggest Fifa World Cup ever reaches its climax on Sunday as Spain and Argentina meet in a blockbuster final at New York New Jersey Stadium. Both teams have combined quality, resilience and consistency to earn their place in the showpiece, producing standout performances throughout the tournament.

While both sides boast talent across the pitch, the final could ultimately be decided by a handful of individual battles. From Lionel Messi’s enduring brilliance to the midfield contest between two of the game’s finest controllers, and an intriguing clash between youth and experience out wide, these three duels could prove decisive in the race to lift the trophy.

Aymeric Laporte vs Lionel Messi

Even at 39, Lionel Messi continues to redefine greatness. The Argentina captain heads into the final leading the adidas Golden Boot race with eight goals and has once again demonstrated his unrivalled ability to influence the biggest matches. Alongside his goals, Messi has registered four assists, including two that inspired Argentina’s dramatic comeback victory over England in the semi-finals.

Stopping Messi is easier said than done, but Spain know limiting his influence is essential if they are to become world champions. Much of that responsibility will fall on Aymeric Laporte, who has been the cornerstone of Spain’s outstanding defensive campaign.

Laporte has marshalled the back line with composure and authority, forming an excellent partnership with teenage centre-back Pau Cubarsi. Together they have helped Spain concede just one goal in seven matches, giving La Roja the tournament’s best defensive record. Laporte’s positional awareness, aerial strength and calm distribution will all be tested against a player capable of changing a match in an instant.

If Spain can deny Messi the space and time he thrives on, they will take a significant step towards lifting the trophy.

Rodri vs Enzo Fernandez

The battle in midfield promises to be one of the defining contests of the final. Spain captain Rodri has once again underlined why he is regarded as one of the world’s best holding midfielders, controlling games with remarkable consistency throughout the tournament.

No player has completed more passes than Rodri’s 648, while his passing accuracy of 93 per cent highlights his ability to dictate possession and maintain Spain’s rhythm. His influence extends beyond the ball as well, with his tireless work rate reflected in the tournament-leading distance he has covered. Defensively, his intelligent positioning and timely interventions have repeatedly broken up opposition attacks before they become dangerous.

Standing opposite him is Enzo Fernandez, whose energy and all-round game have been instrumental to Argentina’s run to the final. The midfielder has been relentless in winning back possession, leading his team in forced turnovers while also producing decisive moments in attack.

Fernandez has delivered when Argentina have needed him most, scoring a stoppage-time winner against Egypt in the round of 16 before netting a crucial late equaliser against England in the semi-finals. His ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch makes him one of Argentina’s most valuable players.

Whichever midfielder succeeds in controlling possession, disrupting the opposition and setting the tempo could give their side the edge in what is expected to be a fiercely contested final.

Lamine Yamal vs Nicolas Tagliafico

One of the most fascinating matchups pits Spain’s rising superstar against one of Argentina’s most experienced defenders.

Lamine Yamal entered the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury, but the Barcelona winger has looked increasingly dangerous with every appearance. His speed, close control and creativity have added another dimension to Spain’s attack, and he produced one of his best performances in the semi-final against France, winning the penalty that opened the scoring while constantly threatening down the right flank.

Argentina will rely on Nicolas Tagliafico to contain the 19-year-old. The experienced left-back has once again shown why he remains a trusted figure in Lionel Scaloni’s side, combining disciplined defending with excellent tactical awareness.

A World Cup winner four years ago, Tagliafico brings invaluable experience to another final. He is an accomplished one-on-one defender and understands the demands of football’s biggest stage, qualities that will be essential against one of the most exciting young attackers in the game.

If Tagliafico can limit Yamal’s influence, Argentina will remove one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking outlets. Conversely, should Yamal find space to run at the veteran defender, he has the talent to create the moments that decide the match.

With world-class quality spread across both squads, Sunday’s final promises to be a captivating contest. While teamwork will ultimately determine the outcome, these three individual duels could have the greatest influence on where the FIFA World Cup trophy ends the night.
