Youth gather at Mombasa church for Gen Z memorial

Parliamentary proceedings have been affected by today’s planned protest following the barricading of the house and police blockage of key roads into the city centre.

Several Senate and National Assembly committees that were set for Thursday morning have been rescheduled to later date with reports that the afternoon session of the House will be adjourned as well.

MPs report that they have been informed of the rescheduled sessions. Among the affected committee include the Special Funds Account Committee of the National Assembly that was set to look at the Auditor General report on the Judiciary Fund.

“This meeting has been rescheduled to a later date. Sorry for the inconvenience,” journalists covering the committee were informed early Thursday morning.

The decision to call off parliamentary business is said to have been informed by inconveniences caused by the police blockade with several staff unable to report to work on time.

MPs affliated to the Opposition are also said to have been apprehensive over fears of being targeted for arrest if they showed up.

United Alternative Government chiefs led by Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka have announced their plan to lay wreaths at the gate of parliament in memory of those who died two years ago when Gen Z protestors breached the August house in the now famous anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

In Nairobi CBD, most businesses remain closed with heavily armed police officers patrolling the city centre streets.

At the GPO roundabout, cops have placed roadblock where motorists and pedestrians are being turned away. Only a few people are accessing the CBD with matatus largely staying off the roads.
