The government is speeding up work on the Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret to ensure its ready to host Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.
The national government and the host, Uasin Gishu county, have been intensifying construction work on the facility, with workers camping on site daily for the project to meet set timelines.
The facility is also being prepared as an alternative venue as Kenya gears up for hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Top government officials and Governor Jonathan Bii have been visiting the stadium frequently to supervise work and ensure its on course.
The latest inspection was done by a team led by Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru, who said the government remains fully committed to delivering the project within the scheduled time.
Mariru said the stadium would serve generations of Kenyans long after the national celebrations.
Sports PS Elijah Mwangi, who was also present, said the upgraded facility will elevate Kenya’s sporting standards while positioning Uasin Gishu as a leading hub for sports, tourism and investment.
“We are ensuring that this facility is done to the required standards because it will be used to host many events of local and international nature,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the county, urban development executive Edward Sawe reaffirmed the county’s commitment to working closely with the national government to ensure the project’s successful completion.
He said that the investment will stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and leave a lasting impact on the lives of residents.
Sawe said there was close collaboration between the two levels of government in delivering the project expected to transform the region’s sporting landscape and drive socioeconomic development.
Other top officials who have also been inspecting work at the stadium include Timothy Kilimo, director general of Sports Kenya; county attorney Sylvester Metto; chief officer for Sports Victorine Kapkiai; and Eldoret City manager Elzeba Busienei.
The Kenya Defence Forces is supervising the ongoing work at the stadium where President Ruto will lead the Mashujaa Day celebrations.
The event will be co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties.
”We are on schedule to ensure all arrangements are taking place because it will be a huge event and the first one for our region,” Governor Bii said.
