EACC Arrests 2 KRA Officials for Demanding KSh 3 Million Bribe

Two Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) officials have been arrested for requesting a KSh 3 million bribe to offer services. 2 KRA Officials arrested by EACC.  The two were arrested by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following complaints from a Kenyan seeking resolution of a Capital Gains Tax assessment. The tax assessment in question amounted to KSh 4.5 million. The two, Faith Gathoni Njoroge and Tyson Marango Owuor, were based at the KRA Upperhill offices at the time of the arrest. Why did police arrest KRA officials? “The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested two employees of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) over allegations of soliciting and receiving a bribe in connection with a tax matter,” EACC said in a statement.

“The suspects, Faith Gathoni Njoroge and Tyson Marango Owuor, both based at KRA’s Upper Hill offices, were arrested following a complaint that they had demanded Kes3 million from a taxpayer in exchange for influencing the resolution of a Capital Gains Tax assessment amounting to Kes4.5 million.” The officers had begun the investigations after the complainant filed the case with them. Subsequently, the commission conducted an operation during which the suspects were allegedly caught receiving KSh 900,000. The amount was suspected of being part of the payment of the bribe. After the two were arrested, the money was also recovered and seized to be used as exhibits. As for the two KRA officials, they were processed at the Integrity Centre pending the conclusion of investigations and appropriate action under the Anti-Bribery Act, 2016. This is not the first time officials working for the taxman have been caught in a scandal involving bribery.
