Playtime turns tragic as boy, 5, dies in freak rope accident near family home in Siaya

A five-year-old boy died in an incident at Huduma ‘A’ Village in Yenga Sublocation, Ugenya Sub-County, Siaya County.

Police said the child’s grandmother reported that she found her grandson hanging from a tree near the family’s fence at around 1:45 p.m. on Monday.

Officers who visited the scene found the boy lying unresponsive on the ground, with a rope still tied to the tree.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the child had been playing alone near the fence using a rope that had been tied to the tree. Police believe the rope may have accidentally become wrapped around his neck and tightened while he was playing.

The boy’s grandmother reportedly discovered him and attempted to rescue him, but he could not be saved.

Police processed and documented the scene. No visible physical injuries were observed on the body apart from those consistent with the reported circumstances.

A police team that responded to the scene found the body of Robert Nyongesa Situma lying on a footpath in a supine position.

The deceased had visible injuries to the head and neck, which investigators believe may have been caused by a blunt object.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Situma was last seen at a homestead in the village shortly before his death.

Police processed and documented the scene before launching investigations that led to the arrest of four suspects. The individuals remain in custody pending their arraignment in court.

The body was moved to the Bungoma County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination.
