The National Heroes Council has invited the public, organisations, groups and institutions to submit nominations for individuals to be considered for declaration as national heroes.
In a notice issued under the Kenya Heroes Act, No. 5 of 2014, the Council said the exercise aims to identify and recognise persons who have made exceptional contributions to the country.
The Council operates under the mandate of the National Heroes Council, which is tasked with identifying, selecting and providing for the recognition of national heroes.
“Pursuant to provisions of Section 22 of the Act, the public is hereby NOTIFIED that the Council is calling for submission of proposals for nomination of suitable persons to be recommended for declaration as heroes.”
According to Jimmy Nuru Ondieki, Chairman of the National Heroes Council, nominations may be submitted by any member of the public or any institution. The Council said eligible individuals must have demonstrated selfless service and sacrifice for the country across a wide range of functional areas.
These include liberation struggle, spiritual leadership, indigenous knowledge, cultural values and practices, arts and sports, scholarship, professionalism and research.
Other areas are peace-making, statesmanship, entrepreneurship and industry, philanthropy, human rights, national cohesion and integration, and environmental conservation.
The Council further noted that nominees should demonstrate values enshrined in Article 10 of the Constitution of Kenya. These include patriotism, national unity, integrity, and respect for human dignity. It also highlighted additional qualities expected of nominees such as selflessness, courage, perseverance, commitment, expertise, talent, innovativeness, discipline and optimism.
Nominations will be evaluated in line with the provisions of the Kenya Heroes Act. The Council said the process will ensure that only individuals who meet the required standards are recommended for recognition.
The public have been directed to access nomination forms through the Council’s official website at www.heroes.go.ke. Completed forms may be submitted through multiple channels to enhance accessibility.
These include online submission via the Council’s website, email through nominations@heroes.go.ke, hand delivery to the Office of the Chief Executive Officer at the National Heroes Council offices located at Embankment Plaza in Upper Hill, Nairobi, or by post addressed to the Chief Executive Officer at P.O. Box 30001-00100, Nairobi.
The Council has set a deadline of 30 days from the date of publication of the notice. All submissions must be received on or before July 1, 2026.
Successful nominations will be considered for recognition during Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for October 20, 2026.
