Kenyan comedian and content creator Sammie Kioko has sparked emotional reactions online after sharing an update about a homeless man he attempted to help along King’ara Road in Nairobi.
Kioko revealed that the man was once his football teammate at Vapor World Hope in Kawangware before drugs allegedly changed his life.
According to the comedian, the man ran away during the encounter and insisted that he was okay, despite concerns about his condition.
The incident has since triggered conversations on social media about addiction, homelessness, and the ethics of filming vulnerable people.
“He Deserves A Second Chance”
After the encounter, Kioko shared an emotional message in the comment section of his post, explaining why he still believes the man deserves support and compassion.
“Sometimes a hurting soul pushes everyone away, not because they want to be alone, but because life has been too hard on them,” Kioko wrote.
Deep down, they are only wishing for kindness, peace, and someone who won’t give up on them. I still believe he deserves help, healing, and a second chance. I will keep pushing.”
The message touched many Kenyans online, with some praising him for not giving up on his former teammate despite the difficult situation.
Others, however, criticised the recording of the encounter, arguing that vulnerable people should be helped privately and with dignity.
“By the way, do you know it’s wrong to record someone without their permission?” one social media user commented.
Another wrote:
Bro is okay. He doesn’t need cameras. He’ll get genuine help, maybe, but not from people who do it for the cameras.”
Mixed Reactions From Kenyans
Despite the criticism, some users defended Kioko and pointed out that he has also faced struggles in the past.
“Kioko, a few months ago, he was in need; now he is helping the needy. Wow,” another user commented.
Others suggested organising a mchango — a community fundraiser — to support homeless people battling addiction and life on the streets.
The full details surrounding the homeless man’s background have not been independently verified. However, the story has reopened conversations around the growing number of vulnerable young people living on Nairobi’s streets.
