KeNHA warns motorists after flooding disrupts Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road

The Kenya National Highways Authority has issued a traffic advisory after flooding and silt deposition disrupted sections of the Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok (B7) road on Thursday evening.

In a statement dated March 19, 2026, KeNHA said the affected section is at Kedong Ranch near Suswa, where heavy rainfall has led to rising water levels and accumulation of silt on the roadway, making it impassable in some areas.

The authority said response teams have been deployed to the site and are working to restore normal traffic flow.

“The Authority is currently working to reopen the affected section of the road,” KeNHA said in the advisory.

Motorists have been cautioned against attempting to drive through flooded sections, with the agency warning that such actions could result in vehicles being swept away or getting stuck in silt deposits.

Drivers have also been urged to strictly follow instructions issued by police officers and traffic marshals stationed along the affected stretch to manage movement and ensure safety.

The situation has been compounded by continued heavy rainfall being experienced in the area, raising concerns over further deterioration of road conditions, particularly along the stretch between Naivasha Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Suswa Ranch.

KeNHA advised motorists who had not yet commenced their journeys to delay travel plans until floodwaters subside.

“Motorists who have not yet commenced their journeys are advised to delay travel until floodwaters subside,” the authority said.

For those with unavoidable travel plans, the agency provided alternative routes to ease movement and minimise disruption.

Motorists travelling towards Narok and surrounding areas have been advised to consider using the Ngong–Suswa route, the Nairobi–Naivasha–Nakuru–Mau Narok–Narok route, or the Nairobi–Naivasha–Longonot–Suswa route.

The authority noted that the advisory is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard road users amid changing weather conditions and to reduce the risk of accidents associated with flooding.

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli assured road users that teams are working around the clock to address the situation and restore safe passage along the highway.

He emphasised the importance of road safety, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, urging motorists to remain vigilant and adhere to guidance issued by relevant authorities.

The Mai Mahiu–Suswa–Narok road is a key transport corridor linking Nairobi to Narok and further to western Kenya and neighbouring regions, making it a critical route for both passenger and commercial transport.

Flooding incidents along major highways have become more frequent during periods of heavy rains, often disrupting travel and posing safety risks to motorists.

KeNHA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users and called on motorists to exercise extreme caution when travelling in affected areas.
