Homeboyz plot Gor Mahia downfall in Mumias

Kakamega Homeboyz coach Edward Manoah wants his players to match Gor Mahia’s intensity when the two sides meet at Mumias Sports Complex on Wednesday, insisting his team has the quality to trouble the defending SportPesa League champions.

Manoah, who joined from Sofapaka ahead of the 2026/27 season, wants his charges to dominate midfield, defend as a unit and take their chances against a Gor Mahia side that has made a perfect start to the campaign.

“We must stay focused from the first whistle to the last. Gor Mahia are champions, and they know how to punish mistakes. We cannot afford to lose concentration or give them room to play their game. Every player must understand his role and do his job,” said Manoah.

Homeboyz have collected four points from their opening two matches — a 1-0 win over promoted Mombasa United and a one-all draw with Ulinzi Stars. Manoah wants his team to improve its ball retention and transition more quickly from defence to attack.

“We have to be strong in midfield, win the second balls and move forward with purpose. When we win possession, we must know what to do with it. We cannot defend for the whole match and expect to win. We must also create chances and take them,” he said.

Playing at Mumias offers Homeboyz an opportunity to use home advantage to unsettle the champions, but Manoah knows his players must deliver a disciplined performance to secure a positive result.

“We are at home, and we want to make this a difficult game for Gor Mahia. Our supporters expect us to fight for every ball, and that is exactly what we must do. We respect them, but we are not afraid of them,” he said.

“We have prepared well, and the players know what is at stake. If we remain disciplined, play with confidence and take our chances, we can get the result we want,” he added.

Gor Mahia, meanwhile, have collected six points from their opening two matches. They began their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Murang’a Seal before edging APS Bomet 1-0.

Coach Charles Akonnor wants his players to maintain that momentum but has warned against underestimating the hosts.

“We must take this match seriously. What we have done in the first two games counts for nothing once the referee blows the whistle. Homeboyz are a good side, especially at home, and we must be ready for the challenge,” said Akonnor.

The Ghanaian tactician is prepared to adjust his approach to counter Homeboyz’s resistance, with midfield control and effective use of space expected to be crucial.

“We have to stay compact and control the midfield. There will be moments when we need to play directly, stretch their defence and use the space available. The important thing is to make the right decisions and stick to our plan,” he said.

“We cannot afford to switch off, even for a moment. These games demand concentration and commitment from everyone. We must fight for every ball and stay disciplined until the final whistle,” Akonnor added.

Gor Mahia have won their last two league meetings with Homeboyz, both by 1-0 margins. Their most recent encounter, on May 3, was decided by a 92nd-minute own goal at Mumias, while their December 2025 meeting also ended in a narrow victory for K’Ogalo.

The January 2025 encounter between the sides finished goalless, offering Homeboyz hope that they can frustrate the champions if they remain organised and disciplined.
