Kenya Police coach Nicholas Muyoti will put his knowledge of AFC Leopards to the test when the two title hopefuls clash in a potentially explosive SportPesa League encounter at Nyayo National Stadium today.
The former Leopards player and captain faces his old club at 3 pm, with the Law Enforcers seeking their first victory of the 2026/27 campaign after being held to a 1-1 draw by newly promoted Migori Youth in Awendo.
Ingwe, meanwhile, were frustrated by Bandari in a goalless stalemate, leaving both sides under pressure to get their title campaigns moving. Despite dropping points in their opening matches, Muyoti insists Police remain firmly on course in their pursuit of the league crown. “No, I am not disappointed. The title ambitions are well on course,” he said.
Police recovered after conceding in the sixth minute to force an equaliser against Migori Youth shortly before half-time. Although the performance exposed areas requiring improvement, Muyoti believes the result offers a foundation to build on ahead of a tougher test against the former champions. “Although we did not start the match strongly, it is a point to build on towards our title aspirations,” he said.
The coach will demand a more convincing start against Leopards, warning that another sluggish opening could prove costly against their more experienced opponents.
The technical bench has been working to address the shortcomings identified in Awendo, with concentration and execution among the key areas of focus. “There were a few mistakes here and there to rectify,” Muyoti said. His familiarity with Leopards could prove valuable as he seeks to exploit their weaknesses.
Having played and captained Ingwe, Muyoti understands the expectations surrounding the club, but must now turn that experience into an advantage for Police. Police finished third last season with 55 points, while Leopards were runners-up on 64, seven behind champions Gor Mahia.
Both clubs are targeting the title this season, making Tuesday’s showdown an early test of their championship credentials. Police are expected to deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation, with a double midfield pivot providing defensive cover and supporting the attack.
The system could switch to a 4-3-3 when they push forward, with striker Elvis Rupia leading the line. However, Police must remain alert to the danger of exposing themselves to Leopards’ counterattacks when committing players forward.
Ingwe coach Fred Ambani is equally determined to get his side’s campaign back on track after the draw against Bandari. While acknowledging Police’s quality, he challenged his players to rise to the occasion.
“First, we respect the Police as a good team with good players,” Ambani said. Leopards finished second last season and are determined to go one better, with Ambani making their ambitions clear.
“Definitely, we cannot do anything below the second position from last year’s performance, so now we aim higher and, for sure, we are going for the title,” he said.
Ambani has also prioritised improving his side’s attacking output, particularly against opponents who restrict space in open play. Set pieces have featured prominently in training as Ingwe seek alternative routes to goal.
“When a team is struggling, it becomes very difficult to find the back of the net from open play, so we have been working on set-pieces to create chances,” he said. Leopards have received a boost with defender Kayci Odhiambo available after recovering from injury.
Historical league statistics favour Ingwe, who have won four of their 11 top-flight meetings with Police. The Law Enforcers have claimed two victories, while five encounters have ended in draws.
Police, however, will take confidence from their emphatic 3-0 victory over Leopards on April 18, 2026, which underlined their ability to trouble their rivals. With both sides on one point, Tuesday’s encounter offers an early opportunity to gain ground in the title race.
For Muyoti, it is a chance to turn his knowledge of Ingwe into a winning formula, while Ambani will be keen to ensure Leopards do not suffer another setback in their pursuit of the crown.
